Jo Spaul Illustration and Linocut Prints

linocut prints

A quiet little hamlet in North Hertfordshire was my home until 1995 when I left to study Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art, where I gained my Degree.

In 2005 I moved up to the beautiful North Norfolk coast, where I felt inspired to create a series of coastal themed artwork. Now living in Norwich, I have access to the buzz of city life while knowing that I'm never far from a breathtaking coastal view.

I'm constantly creating new artwork inspired by my surroundings and favourite themes of flora and fauna and the natural environment. Lino is a favourite medium of mine involving cutting out the light areas from a block, inking it up and printing the uncarved raised areas. Colours are then either painted by hand as a wash or a separate lino block is used to print each colour.

Working as a freelance artist for over 15 years, I have been creating a variety of artwork from book illustrations to murals and from logos to furniture makeovers. Commissions have included illustrations for magazines including the RSPB and Norfolk Coast Guardian, children's books, various signs and murals for the Dabbling Duck pub in Great Massingham, the Hunstanton in Bloom festival and both the Field Studies Centre and Dutch ship 'Albatros' in Wells-next-the-Sea.
